CHAPTER TWENTY

Once Father’s signal dropped, Lyndsey returned to the laptop and spun it on the table toward Jonas.

“Are you sure you’re okay?” she asked.

“Hate to admit it,” he said with a grimace, “but not really. It’s not the first wet work I’ve had to do, but I’ll never get used to it. I’ll also admit that, now I’m here, hopefully it’ll be my last. No one ever trained me for this. I’m a numbers guy.”

“And you think a church treasurer and a priest are better equipped? We’re right with you, Jonas. Hopefully, this will also be our last, although I suspect we should plan for one more.”

Jonas sat back in his chair and ignored the screen.

“You’ve had other orders? Another mission?”

Lyndsey shook her head.

“No, but we know Honos is not going to leave us alone, even if we say please. We’re going to have to find a way to dismantle the entire thing, and they don’t seem like the negotiating kind.”

“Honos likes control. Nothing less.”

“Then it’ll take more than raised voices and nasty looks to wrestle that away. Brace yourself for at least one more fight.”

“If it gets us out of this mess,” said Jonas, “consider me reluctant but braced.”

He leaned in toward the laptop.

“So, what have you got?”

“Okay. Remember the list of names?”

“Yes, the other people on Father’s team.”

“Correct. While you were sleeping off your nastiness, I did a little poking around to find out who they are.”

“And?”

Lyndsey tapped the mouse pad.

“I found more of a ‘where they are’ instead.”

“Care to elaborate?” said Jonas.

She gestured toward the screen. A map of the world filled it, with four markers placed at different positions.

“Normally, after deployment, most folks head home, right?”

“I’d say so. Family, relationships, job offers. And most people want to be back in either familiar surroundings or around friendly faces. What are the dots for?”

Lyndsey tapped the marker closest to her.

“Brazil. That’s where I found Morgan Reid, the team’s IT expert.”

Jonas shrugged.

“Okay, maybe she has family there?”

“Not that I can find. Unless she’s dating on the quiet, she’s still single. That being said, she has no online presence. No social media at all.”

“Neither do I,” said Jonas. “I’m not sure that’s unusual.”

“Liam Beckett,” said Lyndsey with another screen tap. “He’s in Spain.”

She tapped the screen twice more.

“Sean Cunningham is in sunny England, and Jordan Wallbanks is here in Kentucky.”

“Seriously? A member of this dark team is in the same state as another? Is that odd?”

“No idea. Depends on his motives, I suppose.”

Jonas stroked his chin.

“Hold on, didn’t you say there were seven names? You’ve only mentioned four.”

“Correct,” said Lyndsey with a nod. “Spiritually, we’re very close to the other three.”

“Dead?”

“Ethan West left the service and bought himself a huge motorcycle. It’s weird, since Father also likes his bike. Fortunately, Father doesn’t wipe out on a busy highway in Los Angeles, weaving through traffic at over a hundred.”

“Ouch. I’ll bet that left a mark,” said Jonas.

“No doubt. Dan Copeland spent months in and out of counseling sessions. He never accepted everything he did and left behind a wife and two kids.
